The Study tour was organised by I.C.S.A. in line with its interest to promote Sicily as a place of cultural and scientific importance, together with ProGEO (whose work is focused on the promotion and protection of Europe’s typical and important landscapes, as well as its many-faceted heritage of geological phenomena of greatest scientific and cultural importance) and SIGEA (Association Recognised by the Italian Ministry for the Environment whose work focuses on Environmental Protection at the National Level. The Study Tour was conducted by the geologist Dott. Francesco Geremia, who was also responsible for its design and scientific content. I.C.S.A. was supported in this undertaking by the Travel Operator – Mata Club di Scuderi Maria di Catania.
Participants to the study tour had the pleasure of being guests of the Whitaker Foundation (Isle of Mozia), the Lord Mayor of Custonaci, Prof. Enrico Curcuruto, from the Mining Institute S. Mottura in Caltanissetta, who presented on the history of the sulpher mines and the mining industry in the territory of Caltanissetta, Ing. Giuseppe Lupo, President of the Ente Parco Minerario di Floristella, who guided the group in a visit of the park and the volcanolgist Prof. Pietro Carveni, who curated the visit to Mt Etna’s Sartorious Craters.
The next Study Tour to be offered in 2014 will focus on the geology of AUSTRALIA .
